One root resume solves the “I need ten resumes” problem

Maybe you don't know if you should have one resume or ten, and you definitely don't want to maintain ten of them by hand every time something changes.

Job seekers usually end up needing several resumes: one shape per job type they target, then a further tweaked copy for every company they actually apply to, and keeping those in sync by hand is how resumes go stale. The fix is three tiers: one root resume holding your whole career history, specialized resumes derived from it for each job type you target (e.g. “backend engineering,” “platform engineering”), and disposable company branches created per application. Update the root once (a new job, a new certification) and rebase that update into your specialized resumes instead of re-typing it everywhere.
